Man United, Arsenal Eyeing a Move for Ranger Captain James Tavernier This Summer; Should Gerrard Sell ?

United and Arsenal both are reportedly interested in signing Rangers Captain James Tavernier during the summer transfer window

Rangers captain James Tavernier has been on the radar of English giants such as Man United and Arsenal. Manchester United will be looking out to solidify the right-back position, with Wan Bissaka currently holding the spot and might face stiff competition from Tavernier if the switch from Scotland to Manchester becomes successful, while Arsenal are keen on signing a right-back after reports suggesting Hector Bellerin being tipped for a move to Inter Milan this summer.

The 29-year old was part of the best defensive setup in the Scottish Premiership under the management of Steven Gerrard. The right-back so far has 289 appearances to his name along with 65 goals and 90 assists. It’s quite clear why the player was named Captain by Steven Gerrard and his contribution to Gers has been immense to say the least.

Even though Tavernier had penned down a new three-year deal at Ibrox recently in April, according to the report in 90min interest from clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Brighton and other Premier League clubs could test Ranger’s and the players resolve in sticking together. This is a lucrative move for a player who is heading for his 30’s and maybe is in his prime of footballing career.

Even if the offers from Man Utd & Arsenal seem far stretched in terms of his playing time at these clubs, opportunities from clubs like Brighton and Norwich City may seem like a good option for the player. Brighton are on the lookout for a new right-back after Lamptey is expected to be out of the team after suffering a long term injury recently and Tavernier could slot in perfectly in his position.

The reports of Tavernier making a possible switch to Old Trafford has been greeted with a positive reaction from United Fans, and they seem rather excited about the player being linked to the club. His performances and achievements at Ibrox have not gone unnoticed, though the question remains whether Ole and Man Utd would want to invest in a defender who is edging closer to his 30’s.

While Rangers would surely try to keep the player in their clutches and would not want their Captain to make the switch after signings a new contract with the club, they might find it difficult to do so if an actual offer materialises. Tavernier, without a doubt, has had a massive influence over this Rangers team and has been instrumental in their rise back to the very top. Not to mention being the captain of their first Premiership winning team in a decade.

The Englishman moreover has around 19 goals in all competitions to his name, last season alone for Rangers. Even though 10 have come from the penalty spot.

Losing out on their Captain is surely not what Ranger would want, but if things do go south and somehow these clubs tend to have a way of making things happen for themselves, the Gers are likely to stamp a hefty price tag on his head who has a market value of more than £7.20m (via transfermarkt) A price tag of €10-15 million would be the asking price set up by the Rangers for any club who comes looking for his services.

It will be interesting to see how the clubs interested in signing the right-back make their moves for the potential transfer and what stand do Rangers take to repeal off their interests and to what extend. For now it seems odds are in Rangers’s favour, with the player being tied on a new three-year contract and seemingly happy and excited for the new season ahead.
