Kyle Edwards Back on Celtic Radar; Here’s Why a Move For the Ex-West Brom Winger Makes Sense For The Hoops

Ex-West Brom winger Kyle Edwards was training with Championship side Reading but a permanent move could not be finalised and this has opened doors for Celtic who are reportedly interested in the player and have begun talks.

Kyle Edwards has featured 37 times for the West Bromwich senior team across three seasons, having joined their youth setup at the age of six.

The young forward made 26 appearances for the Baggies in the 2019-20 season in the Championship and also featured 5 times in the Premier League last season. In May this year, the club announced that the English forward would leave the Baggies after being with them for 17 years.

After leaving the Baggies, Edwards was on trial with Reading over the past few weeks but decided against signing a permanent deal with the Royals. The 23-year-old is now training with Championship side Bournemouth and also featured for them in their pre-season friendly against Chelsea.

Now, according to reports, Celtic are on the lookout for a striker and are interested in signing Kyle Edwards. The 23-year-old forward has been extensively scouted by the Hoops for the last 18 months. Celtic would want to make the most of the opportunity as the player is a free agent at present and looking for a new home with Bournemouth also keen.

Moreover, Celtic want to bring in an additional strike force as their star striker Odsonne Edouard is linked with a move to Brighton. The Hoops are willing to let go of their striker if they get the proper price and the Premier League club have placed an official bid of £20m to sign the player. Celtic are currently considering the offer while manager Postecoglou is looking at players to replace the Frenchman.

Although the Hoops have already signed Kyogo Furuhashi from Japanese club Vissel Kobe and Liel Abada from Israeli club Maccabi Petah Tikva, the manager wants more quality and depth in his squad to win trophies and challenge Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title this season. Kyle Edwards would be a good addition for Celtic, given his potential.

Why a Move for Kyle Edwards Makes Sense for the Hoops :

A move to Celtic does seem like a good move for the youngster with the prospect of playing in Europe and shining for one of the biggest clubs in Scotland. Also, he will get better first-team opportunities at Parkhead as Edouard’s exit seems imminent after his recent drab performance in the champions league qualifiers, making new manager much more open to experimentation.

If the Edouard deal is finalised, Celtic will need to sign a new striker this summer to replace the Frenchman, which can be tricky given the high value of good young players. Moreover, talented players are on the lookout for better options which makes it harder for the club to get hold of the player and tie him to the club on a permanent deal.

In Kyle Edwards, Postecoglou would get a player who is young and has great potential without spending any money. He is a free agent which means the move does not put a dent in the club’s pocket. The club need to make quick decisions in the transfer market to get hold of their potential signings as the season opener against Hearts draws closer.
